Why communicating with Spirit Guides is easy as a Highly Sensitive Person

One of your gifts as a highly sensitive person is your awareness of subtle energy (although you may not be conscious of this yet!). Now what do I mean by that? Well, there is more to existence than the material realm - what we can physically see and touch. We are not alone in the world, but you are being continually guided and supported in the unseen realms by ‘spirit helpers’ in different forms. As a highly sensitive person it could be very easy for you to open the door of communication to your guides…

So why is this? As a HSP your sensitivity gives you the ability to tune in to more subtle information and energy around you, you can potentially with practice: sense the thoughts or feelings of others (people or animals), feel memories imprinted on a place (i.e.buildings), sense the earth's magnetic field and ley lines, feel the healing fields of plants - and become aware of the presence of or messages from ‘Spirit helpers, guides and light beings’. As you have the ability to tune into subtle realms existence with ease (as you have strong intuitive abilities), you just need to train it, trust and practice.

This experience of guidance and support can feel very subtle to begin with, for example: in times of despair I had physically felt the sensation of huge invisible wings wrapping around me or had felt the loving presence of my Nan who had passed by my side. When asking for guidance in my mind, the hairs on my arm would suddenly stand on end or I'd feel a flood of warmth in my chest and love. But for me, because it wasn’t ‘visible’ and it was ethereal, it was easy to dismiss it as imagined somehow or not real.

However, I vividly remember the first time I ‘saw’ these ‘guides’ and it was a powerful turning point for me. It was during my Shiatsu training. We were told to tune into the room during a session whilst sitting next to our receiver. Suddenly, for me, the number of people in the room suddenly tripled. As I looked around each student laying down there stood three or more light beings, who all suddenly turned and looked towards me. Startled, I asked what was going on and was told I was accessing another realm of reality.

Then as I began to practice shiatsu and develop my sensitivity to subtle energy, a door opened for me and different non physical beings began to appear during treatments but I wasn't particularly sure what to ‘do with them’. For example, at times if a client was in crisis I would feel a sudden pressure all around me like a crowd of their invisible helpers descending on me, desperate to communicate and help. But it felt intense and too much as I didn't know what to do. So I kept that world at a distance. At the time as well I was struggling with overwhelm and it just felt like more than I could handle.

But who are these guides and invisible supporters? My experience to date tells me our understanding of who comes through is often influenced by our past life connections, current perception of the reality and philosophical leanings. That said, if we are open, all sorts come through! We can not perceive that which we are not open to. But also what we witness and channel is dependent on our stage of spiritual-psychic development, the access we have to the interdimensional realms (light levels) and in part our personality or philosophical interests.

Personally I tend not to get too fixed on who the guide is and their qualities or role or name etc. For example, I usually experience them as light beings, through warmth and light. It's often our conscious minds which want to solidify and fix our experience. I find who comes to me and to others can also be quite fluid and dependant on what the current need at the time or the transition or healing process they are in. I receive them with thanks and release them with gratitude. That is enough.

However some examples of the Guides I have seen from my experience to date are as follows: family ancestors, loved ones passed over, past life teachers or loved ones, spirit animals, plant spirits, Angels, Archangels, ascended masters, deities or gods or goddesses - i.e. Egyptian, Pagan, Shamanic, divine feminine figures etc, Buddha’s and Bodhisattvas, sacred geometry and star consciousness…

So how do you learn to engage with them? In short, practice. Through intuitive attention and practice I have learnt to hone my sensitivity skills to communicating with guides. What you place your attention on grows - therefore if you place your attention this will then grow ie developing your ability to receive information. This also required developing my trust and confidence in my experience as well as the process of course.

So how does this work in practice? Let's begin with a simple exercise to ‘meet your guides’ (or listen to a free guided ‘Meet your guides meditation’ on here). Find a quiet space and close your eyes. Take some slow deep breaths and long exhales, begin to settle yourself and calm. Now for interest, lightly scan yourself from head to toe to have a sense of your energy field and physical, emotional-mental state currently. Now let go of that awareness returning to the breath and present. Next, simply ask in your mind for your guides ‘please step forward and make contact with me’. Stay curious to any changes you notice to your experience from before. Then open your eyes again.

What did you notice, if anything? The experience can be subtle and different for each of us. For example, you may have experienced a gentle wave of calm, love or peace. You may have noticed an area of tension softening and easing. You may have experienced a sense of hope, expansion or a feeling of interconnectedness. You might feel warmth flow into your chest, feel more grounded and open, to name a few.

With practice this subtle art of receiving contact, information and healing can become much clearer and stronger. We can also learn how to translate what we receive through each of our senses. For example, I have always been very ‘clairsentient’ - as I’m sure you all are as shiatsu practitioners, but mostly I translated that information visually in my mind, ‘clairvoyance’, but I would never hear anything, 'clairaudience' which frustrated me as I felt that would be useful. However I developed this skill by simply repeatedly asking to hear it. Now, when I feel flooded with light in my head and my ears go warm or glow, I know I am being spoken to and I just listen or often repeat the words to the client or a friend. You can develop each sense with time and intention.

So how can Guides help? In every way you can think of! In both your personal and professional life, the key however is to ask to open a dialogue. For example, before writing this article I tuned in and asked for help. I then heard a message about the purpose of the piece which I wrote down and then I felt a presence supporting me with the writing. To be honest, I don’t feel like ‘I’ wrote this. I opened and it flowed out of me with ease.

You can work with them consciously too. You can also work with guides to clear your own blocks by receiving healing or sending it, or to help support or guide a relationship, or to calm you down in a moment of difficulty, or to help with direction in terms of a life decision, we can ask for teachings in a dream, allow them to help guide our work. Guides are there to support you to develop and grow, but you have free will, you will never be ‘made’ to do anything, even if it's for your highest good or potential! You can choose - choose your direction, choose to receive, choose to let go etc. The more often you do it, the more natural and the easier it becomes. For me personally this approach has actually transformed my healing practice and approach to life.

So what can working with guides consciously give you? It can open a doorway to transcendental magic and beauty in the world that can be accessible to us daily. We can be confident and calm knowing we can ask for help and be supported. That we are not alone and we don’t need to figure it all out on our own, we can hand it over. Through consciously receiving healing, teachings, guidance and love we can experience positive changes and transformation in our lives - we are also able to share this with others. All we have to do is ask.
