5 Intuitive Superpowers of highly sensitive people

highly sensitive intuitive

I believe that we are all blessed with intuition, however for highly sensitive people (HSP’s) our natural heightened sensitivity can make our intuition a superpower which we can use in all aspects of our life and may even form the basis of our career - if we choose to train it.

I also believe honing your intuitive skills is essential as a HSP to manage living in the world and to not be chronically overwhelmed and anxious. We need to learn to acknowledge the input we are receiving to make sense of our experience - input that many others won't even be aware of.

When we acknowledge this difference and accept it, it helps to stop comparing ourselves to others as we realise our sensitivity gives us a different perspective, a different experience of the world and therefore a different set of needs. Here are some of the intuitive abilities that can come naturally to HSP’s:

1. Feeling subtle energy and vibration

Highly sensitive people have a highly sensitive nervous system. We are a bit like very sensitive antennas and we easily pick up on vibrational information. Everything in the world is made of energy vibrating at different frequencies. When this subtle energetic frequency touches us - we receive information about: the vibrational tone of emotions, thought waves, memories in someone’s field, vibrational atmospheric qualities of a place, or we can sense non-physical beings for example.

It’s this sensitivity when honed, that can be a key superpower for someone who is highly sensitive. When you can learn to filter the details coming in and begin to trust your intuition, leaning into this invisible knowledge you have, it can give you important information which you can use in both your professional and personal life. If you're anything like me, everything you can discern nonverbally about people, situations and places might be called ‘magic’ by others - when really I have just trained my sensitivity skills over time and learnt to trust them however this skill does allow me to connect to wonderful beings such as angels, animal spirit guides and enter different realms.

2. Feeling the emotions of others

As humans, we have a capacity called somatic empathy which as an expert on the subject Cindy Engel describes it is “experiencing what other people feel while being aware that this vicarious state is produced by someone else.” The purpose of the skill was to enable us to connect with others, pre-verbally, thereby being able to know their intent, both positive or negative - to stay safe by escaping or stay in connection. For HSP’s our somatic empathy can be incredibly strong and overwhelming without knowing it at times particularly if we have not worked on our boundaries or learnt to filter the information coming at us.

But what this skill gifts us with is multiple: It can help manage our relationships (personal and work) and negotiate our boundaries as we can confidently sense the intentions of others (once we trust what we know and don't talk ourselves out of it!) protecting us or connecting us more deeply with others. We can use its ability as healers to work more effectively on our clients (it’s the foundation of my Intuitive Healing practice), or with animals and nature connecting with ease. We are able to tune into the group as well as, the emotional tone in the room and help navigate group dynamics.  It is an incredibly valuable skill which can be used in different ways and across distances.

3. Hearing the thoughts of others

I had a client who was incredibly telepathic - or you might say has incredible clairaudient skills, but didn't realise it. Whenever she would get into a discussion with her partner, she would begin to feel frustrated as her mind was flooded with thoughts that felt like they came out of nowhere, like she was ‘being invaded or flooded’ by thoughts that had not originated from her. Then it became very confusing to know her own mind in those moments.

This is an example of what it can be like to be sensitive to the vibration of other people's thoughts. This is one where your skill as a highly sensitive antenna can pick up information from others. With this client, once we started to unpack the different ‘tone’ of what it felt like to be impressed upon by someone else's thoughts for her, it became easier for her to filter what was ‘hers’ and what was ‘theirs’. This then gave her clarity in the moment, alleviated frustration of not knowing how she felt and gave her confidence to assert her boundaries so she didn't just take on someone else's opinion as her own.

4. Just knowing, intuitive prediction

There are stories of individuals, having predictive dreams or premonitions regarding world events, whether that was the 9/11 twin towers, tragedy, or a tsunami striking - the intuitive ability of prediction has been common throughout history. On a day-to-day level, we may know it as a deep sense of knowing which can come suddenly like just knowing someone is going to die young. It can be frustrating for some as there's no eloquent reasoning you can give for this intuitive knowing, it just arrives - but it isn’t always tragic!

This feeling can take different forms. I will use myself for some examples:

  • I saw a woman across the field at a festival and an internal voice said immediately we're going to be really good friends before we even met for the first time.

  • Within a few months of being with my partner, knowing I wanted to marry him (after decades of fearing commitment)

  • Dreaming of a friend crying then upon waking knowing that they were upset, or in trouble, and contacting them to find out it was true.

Sometimes this intuitive knowing is a directive, like knowing a project, or investment or business is going to work out, even if it doesn't look like a good idea at the moment. Or this intuitive knowing can tell you a person is bad news and to stay away. Once we learn to listen and trust, it can be a great resource of knowledge and can help with decision making.

5. Connection beyond the veil

The gift of being high sensitive makes many HSP’s natural mystics and healers. Tuning into the subtle realms of our reality can be just second nature once we train this skill. This can allow us to traverse the liminal spaces and enables us to connect with non-physical beings such as Archangels, angels, nature spirits, spirit animals, loved ones past, goddesses and gods, bodhisattvas, ascended masters, saints, teaching guides and so on. Often who we meet resonants with our own personal beliefs and interests or we are connected to them through past life experiences.

We can become channels for the healing, wisdom, insight, guidance, comfort, compassion and transcendental perspective in our ‘mundane, material realm’. We can receive mentoring and teachings from them. We can share the information and knowledge they have as well as their vision of ourselves, others and the world. We can become channels of healing for them. As HSP’s to be able to tune into these realms and non-physical beings makes life not only magical but also helps to raise our consciousness and bring about insight; a beauty we often wish to share.
