How you and your children can connect to the magic of the unseen world

The world of the unseen, angels, spirit guides, goddesses, fairies, is living side-by-side with us day to day.  It is simply another level of reality that we can connect to through our intuitive sensitivity.

Connecting with guides

From a young age we start to lose our connection with the unseen world simply because we don’t believe it’s true.  We tell our children stories about fairies, mermaids, unicorns and so on and then tell them they don't exist.  This breaks my heart!  I remember that feeling of starting to lose a natural connection to the magic of the world.  Entering the ‘grown up’ world of logic and ‘reality’ which made everything feel lifeless and pointless.  When the fact is they are real, in different forms, as beings or aspects of consciousness, they simply live in the unseen realms as energetic, formless beings.

So when my daughter, aged 5 at the time, began asking me - are they ‘real’?  I said yes but they are invisible to the eye but you can feel them with your body and see them with your intuitive eye.  I then gently guided her through an exercise to connect with her angels.  She could sense and feel exactly what I could see and sense as I saw her angel make contact with her.  (See the free connect with your spirit guides meditation in the library to learn how to do this)

Maintaining a conscious connection with our angels and spirit guides can be invaluable.  As We can become consciously aware of the connection we have with them, the love, the comfort, and the guidance that they offer us when we call on them which is a huge support.  We learn that the universe is a loving one and a helping one.  We can experience less fear because we have this support.

Our guides can also support our healing.  One time my daughter felt stuck in a state of anxiety and sadness, when she learned I help people ‘feel better’, so she asked for healing. So I used this as a teaching moment. I gently guided her to connect with her spirit guides and angels, to ask them to clear what was blocking her.   She would close her eyes, and as I felt a shift, I'd ask her if she could feel it too, and she'd say yes, I feel better now.  Knowing how to connect with that support can be empowering.

Connection with beings in the natural world

When we played fairies and once again, she asked if they were real, I said ‘yes let's go and find some!’.  So I took her to my local woods, hoping that we may find some fairies!  As we reached the centre of the words in the thick of the brush, I saw hundreds of little obs of lights hovering off the ground - this is often how I see light beings before the details emerge.

With excitement, I told my daughter to pause on the path as I could see them.  I turned her in the direction they were and told her to close her eyes to be able to feel them.  As soon as she did, every single one of those lights rushed over to her and danced excitedly all over the front of her body lighting her up.  It was phenomenal.  Without me saying a word, she lent back as though a puppy had leap on her and she started giggling.  I said can you feel that?!  She said ‘yes! It’s all tickly and warm’

The unseen world of nature beings is one that we can feel and learn to see in our minds eye, our intuitive eye.  Children live in an alpha state of frequency naturally until they are about 7 years old, a deeper brain wave state that we enter in relaxation or meditation or trance as adults (what I go into when I channel).  This gives them a natural ability to sense the subtle realms and subtle energy - intuitive connection is natural. They are open to the true nature of reality on all its levels.

As soon as we are told - angels aren't real etc, we start closing the naturally open doors to this reality.  As adults we gaslight ourselves all the time in this way, particularly as highly sensitive people, we pick up on some subtle information about someone, like sensing their true motive but deny it or we tangibly feel the atmosphere in a room as though there’s just been a fight but we ignore that information or think we feel the sensation of wings wrapping around us when we are upset but tell ourselves ‘I’m being silly’ - we shut it down, we don’t develop the skill but deny it and ignore it.

As adults this intuitive ability is something we can retrain, learn to trust and believe in.  As children, it’s already there.  That's why I am delighted when I hear clients tell me that they are sharing what they are learning about intuitive sensing with their children of all ages (when they are interested) so they can start to make use of the skill and trust it. They and we, can then connect to magic in the world that is already available to us.

Energy and consciousness of nature

During a different trip to the woods with my daughter we spoke about ‘talking to nature and talking to trees’.  I explained that ‘talking’ was different to how humans speak, that it was an energetic connection that we make with them.  So we had a play.  I told my daughter to put her hand on the tree.  Then I told her to send the tree loving energy through her hands.  Soon after this, I could see the tree respond in kind, sending energy back through her arms and her whole body.  I asked her what could she feel?  She said there was all this warmth coming up through her arms that made her happy.

The shamanic view of the world is that there is consciousness in all things, including trees, plants, rocks, crystals, rivers, forests, stars and animals and so on.  We are not so separate.  We are able to connect on this level of consciousness with the natural world.  Once again, our children are very sensitive to this.

If you are thinking - oh well it’s fine for you, you can just see all of this stuff and I can’t!  Think again.  I couldn’t always see or sense it, or I wasn't aware I would be able to.  I didn’t pop out the womb able to channel.  It’s taken years of training my sensitivity to be able to connect with the level I can now.  Yet it all started with simply believing what I was feeling on a subtle level and trusting that what I was sensing was real.  I took it seriously and paid attention.  I started playing and exploring.  I made a commitment to trust and follow my intuition, to train it.  You can do the same.

Monsters in the bedroom

Do you remember feeling scared to turn off the lights in your bedroom at night when you were a kid?  Did you ever have the feeling that something unpleasant was watching you or staring in your room and you felt scared?  Well you might have had an entity in there with you or a wandering spirit.  When my daughter says this to me I take it seriously - most of the time, she is right, an entity has attached itself to her during the day and she becomes aware of it as she is going to sleep.

Sometimes my clients are scared of tuning into the unseen world because they’re fearful of seeing entities. What I tried to reassure them is, they can be cleared very easily for the most part. They are also a very, very small part of what is mostly a wonderful experience of the unseen world. As soon as we become aware of them, we can ask our guides, angels or spirit to clear them and it’s done.

Again, acknowledging our child's experience, and then being able to manage it, confidently, helps them to feel protected and safe in the world.  When it occurs, I support her to be part of the experience, making her aware of how it felt before, and then, after once the entity is cleared.  It helps to build her confidence in her intuitive senses as well.

What is important is that we validate and confirm their experiences, not dismiss them.  That we encourage them and train our own intuitive skills to support them!  One of the most powerful skills we can teach our children is to learn to hear their intuitive voice.  To help them know their authentic self, to navigate decision making processes, to read other people and situations.  If you want your child to be a confident adult, you want them to trust and listen to their felt experience - not logic and reason.

Great Mother

Around the home we have some images and statues of Tara and Vajrayogini.  Two Bodhisattvas I see and sense present regularly.  ‘Greater Mother’ is what I hear when I feel an expansive, peaceful and loving presence arrive in session or meditation.  I see and experience her in many forms, from different traditions.  As such I like her to be represented in the home.

My daughter, curious, noticed this and then one day randomly asked to connect to the ‘goddess’.  So I said sure.  So we went through the same exercise that we did to connect with the angels and fairies; however, this time we called the Mother Goddess.  I told her that she appears to each of us in different ways.  I asked her, once she had a felt connection, to describe to me, what she could she in her mind's eye.  At that moment, she described the exact same figure I could see standing before us. Only her version was of course in a pink dress!

My approach with my daughter is to encourage questions about - everything.  To explore the possible answers together, to find ways to explain complex issues metaphorically, to look up the answers I don’t know.  On the subject of intuition, I don’t step in to teach her (no preaching!), but I respond to her interest.  I try to normalise the intuitive and hold a space which makes it easy for her to explore and enjoy.  My belief and connection to this unseen reality, feeds hers.

What is beautiful about this intuitive connection - with the Goddess for example as a divine figure we connect with - is that they are an aspect of our own true nature.  We live with a dualistic perspective, seeing ourselves as separate, when, in fact, these figures are a representation of the true nature of our own consciousness, or an aspect of it on an enlightened potential.  For example, when I find myself spontaneously bursting into flames energetically during meditation and witness the fierce intense presence of Vajrayogini (which to me is calming!) - or I see Yeshe Tsogyal or White Tara - they each say the same thing everytime, ‘I am you, you are me’ or they call me ‘my child’.

So when we support our children to connect with these figures energetically - what we are actually doing is to teach them, not only to connect with sacred consciousness, but also the energetic aspect of the deepest levels of consciousness and their ultimate potential of higher self.  Their innate inner wisdom and compassion.  What could be more valuable and empowering?

Channelling

Because the children live in an alpha state being a channel can be natural to them.  My daughter has an uncanny ability to hear my thoughts, so I have to be careful about what foods I'm thinking about when I'm around her for example or she'll start requesting those snacks!   She also hears me saying her name in my head responding ‘yes mum?’.  We are very connected to our children and our children are very in tune with us and with the world.

For example, I remember as a child, being in the car with my mum, and randomly, I started singing this song.  Shortly after my mum turned on the radio and the same song started playing, cutting into exactly the same point at which I was singing it.  My mum turned to me in shock and said how did you do that?!  Of course, I don't know how I did it. This song just came into my mind.  But that's living in alpha wave states for you - which we can also learn to do as adults.

My daughter demonstrated this ability to tune into thoughts in another way recently.  After telling her, I think you're hearing my thoughts Isla, after saying ‘yes mum’ to me, saying her name in my head…  A little while later, in response to nothing that had happened externally, she said ‘Mum, it's okay to fail’.  As she said it she asked me ‘who said that then?’ realising it wasn’t her own internal voice, so was it my thoughts, but it wasn’t.

I said ‘darling I think you’re channelling’ - as we had just been in the park, and I was attempting to practise heart coherence as I watched her play but it wasn’t working and I felt like I was failing.  I said to her, ‘ask that inner voice who that message was for’.  She paused for a moment, and said ‘both of us’.  I felt deeply comforted by this and took a deep breath that the truth of the message - that was being sent to me via my daughter.

This is the everyday kind of magic we can connect to.  It really does start with simply knowing that it's real.  The thoughts can be heard by others, just like catching a butterfly in a net.  That we are being lovingly witnessed and guided every moment of every day, that ‘angels speak through the mouths of loved ones’.  In a similar way children can be open to and have a sense of their past lives with ease, with particular memories or sensations flowing in from another time, into the present.  They are open to reality and can allow it to flow into their minds.

You don't have to be an intuitive channel like me to start to do this.  I have clients who are sharing basic intuitive skills they are learning with their children already.  We all have to start somewhere with our learning process and if you’re a highly sensitive person, it's likely to be easy (and necessary) for you to train your sensitivity to the subtle realms of information.  If you're anything like me, you may also be driven to learn something, not just for yourself but to help others, this can be a great motivator.  Or perhaps, you simply want to enrich your life by connecting to the magic and beauty that already exists in the world - then it’s time to start listening to and training your intuition.
